Ordovician Reefs of Estonia

During the Late Ordovician period Estonia was in the tropics and many small reefs are preserved from that time, such as in the Vasalemma area, and on the Vormsi and Hiiumaa islands. Together with Ursula Toom (Tallinn), and Mare Isakar (Tartu), we map and collect fossil occurrences to find out, how these reefs where formed and what kind of organisms built them.

Cambrian trace fossils of Kilpisjärvi, Finland

At Finlands northernmost tip, in the Kilpisjärvi-Halti area, Cambrian sediments preserve traces of the earths earliest animals. These occurrences are poorly known. Together with Anette Högström (Tromsø), Jan Ove Ebbestad (Uppsala), and others, we try to find out who produced them and how where they produced.

Transformation of Lake Stechlin, Germany

In the last decade Lake Stechlin, northern Germany underwent dramatic transformation from a once clear-water oligotrophic lake to a turbid mesotrophic lake with regular blue-green blooms. I currently write a book about this transformation. In an ongoing artistic research project I investigate aspects of the relationship of the visitors and locals to this lake.

HAT research

I am part of an interdisciplinary group of researchers and artists which tackle hard-to-grasp patterns of evolutionary change in human and non-human systems. One of this pattern is called hat pattern, because it resembles a hat when plotted in a two-dimensional space with time as x-axis: entities in evolution appear, rise, peak, and vanish. Can we make predictions, when the will be reached?

Krantz fossils

Krantz Rheinisches Mineralien Kontor is a dealer of minerals and fossils, which exists since the 1830s. Many museums in Europe have large collections built from fossils acquired from Krantz, mostly during gthe 19th century. I am the principle investigator of an EU funded project dedicated to digitize these collections and to virtually bring them together at the Geocase.org portal. The aim is, to use these data to learn about the practice of commercial fossil dealing, and to enrich provenance and taxonomy of the data.
